Oporto Arawica (pronounced oh-POOWH-tooh ah-HAW-wee-sah), known locally as Oporto, is the largest city and federal capital of the Federation of Tugal. It is one of the largest cities in the First Region of the planet Antioch, second to Silver City in population only. Oporto Arawica has been a fishing village since Tugali prehistory, strategically located uphill on solid coastal ground, which preserved it from the floods and raiders that afflicted bordering villages; its citizens have capitalized on the abundance of fish in the Arawdielli Sea. The arrival of the first Aerumaen lindori shipments sparked an economic and industrial revolution; the chief of Oporto was able to mimic the freighter's design and glean an abundance of information from undercover Oportan observers who he sent aboard the freighters back to Selishte, and used the information (in combination with a series of economic maneuvers that forced neighboring villages to become dependent on the Oportan economy) to industrialize his city and force neighboring villagers to migrate into Oporto for the sake of work. The city grew in population exponentially; the sanitary construction projects of chief Huari Lapisa were able to support the population accordingly.

Oporto Arawica forged alliances with the neighboring city of Gerrares, which prospered alongside Oporto but was too distant to be in direct competition with the city; Karmykal Burradur, who was elected the next chief of the now massive city, elected the title "doge" for himself and set to ensuring Oporto's supremacy over the other city-states by restricting trade to the inland states on the Simbo River. The inner city-states rallied in their jealousy and declared open war on Gerrares and Oporto in the Tugali War of Unification. The city was not easily reached because of its strategic position; while the other Tugalese busied themselves with destroying Gerrares, the Oportan military swept from the behind and sacked the riotous city-states as they were left lightly defended. Oporto Arawica, under the doge who renamed himself Aguas I, effectively asserted absolute control over the other city-states. The reign of Aguas II and the mercantilist economy he set into place promoted both Oporto and Cape Argent City in Silvermoon to highly prosperous states; the reign of Rayrames I ended the joint mercantilist system, which left Silvermoon's economy out to dry, but accelerated the growth of Tugali cities (especially Oporto).

The city's skyline is the tallest in the First Region, a testament to its continuous bouts of prosperity. Its military is among the most highly disciplined force in the world. In addition, the Oporto de Arawica, the local name for Oporto Arawica's ports, is the busiest port on planet Antioch's first region, responsible for more trade than all other computer civilizations combined.

Etymology and pronunciationEdit

The name "Oporto Arawica" is drawn from two parts: Oporto was the name given to the port cities by transient merchants before the Tugali city-states developed, while Arawica is derived from the first two syllables of the Arawdielli Sea.

Like Rio de Janeiro, Oporto Arawicans have an accent peculiar to their own area. Although many languages are spoken by the inhabitants of Tugal, the accent that carries over all languages is one derived from Unidante. According to standard Unidante rules, the "r" in Oporto becomes silent before a consonant and the second "o" is pronounced "ooh;" however, in "Arawica," the Arawican dialect pronounces all "r"s before vowels like "h." In addition, "c" in the Arawican dialect is always pronounced like "sss" as if it had a cedilla, whether not a cedilla is present or not.
